Just a short distance from the city center, Dunedin Botanic Garden serves as a quiet retreat for locals and visitors alike. New Zealand's oldest botanic garden, it encompasses a number of elegant turn-of-the-century structures, including a fountain from 1890 and iron gates from 1907. The popular Edwardian conservatory features a tropical house, subtropical collection, and cacti and succulents display. Take your time strolling through the garden's winding paths to reveal an herb garden, aviary, and over 100 different species of rhododendrons. Dunedin Botanic Garden Reviews
The Dunedin Botanic Garden is open from dawn to dusk every day and admission is free. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, but we were particularly impressed with the rose garden, the knot garden... more »
Just beautiful. I wish we'd had a LOT more time available for wandering round. Spending what time we did have wandering around was an unalloyed pleasure. more »
We came here with the kids for a run around at the playground. We had a nice feed of fish and chips from the local store. Beautifully kept grounds that can easily entertain the kids for an hour or 2. Plenty of spots for a nice picnic. There are also ducks that love a good feed but only get the approved duck food from the botanical gardens (free of charge as far as I know). There's also a little train that takes you around the Gardens, about a 10 minute ride. There is a small fee but worth it to help with the upkeep of the train. Public toilets available.
These gardens are beautiful. So many different varieties and so much to see. Bronze statues are stunning. Music in the sound shell. Information centre and gift shop great. Bought a new we plant that looks a bit like a bonsai
