White Island Volcano, Bay of Plenty Region

Possibly the most accessible live volcano in the world, White Island Volcano was so named by Captain Cook because it always appeared to be in a cloud of white steam. Reach the crater by luxury motor boat or helicopter, and then explore the shifting, alien landscape on foot. With its ferocious steam vents, bubbling mud pits, hot volcanic streams, and lake of steaming acid, it's clear why the Maori call the island "Te Puia o Whakaari," or the Dramatic Volcano. If that's a little too adventurous for you, take to the skies in a seaplane for an aerial tour of the island and surrounding bay. The waters here are well known for their fishing, including yellowtail kingfish, marlin, and yellowfin tuna. Remember, the island is a protected reserve, so leave nothing but your footprints! • I think my favourite moment of our whole trip to NZ, or at least the most unique moment, was when the tour guide on White Island volcano let us eat sulphur from the volcano and drink water from not one but two volcanic streams (they tasted totally different). Not too sure what that says about me but why shouldn't we forage for snacks on an active volcano island, on our honeymoon.
  • Visited via Frontier Helicopters tour. Unique experience. Note that your clothes will probably smell like sulfur for the rest of the day
