Auckland Museum
Learn about New Zealand's rich history at Auckland Museum, serving as both a major cultural institution and a war memorial. Designed in the 1920s as a commanding neoclassical temple, this structure features an impressive copper dome, added in 2007. The ground floor, dedicated to the Auckland area's natural and military history, houses impressive displays of Maori artifacts, including a war canoe and a carved meeting house (which you can enter only after removing your shoes). The upper levels feature more military exhibits and a display about the region's volcanic fields, including a fascinating simulation of an eruption. For the sake of convenience, take a guided highlights tour, included in your admission ticket. Plan a Auckland trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

An incredible place to learn about the dual cultures of new Zealand and as a visitor I was riveted, especially with the Maori history. The ear memorial is spectacular and a fantastic way to honour the memory of the people who were involved in the conflict, managing to be entertaining, educational and respectful all at once. I was also very happy to watch the Maori cultural display and it's amazing to see people with such a fierce pride in their culture whilst also being funny and amazing performers.

Auckland War Memorial Museum is a fun & exciting place to visit for the whole family. Situated on a top of a hill within Auckland Domain, it is one of Auckland's most iconic buildings. There's free entry to Auckland residents however, out-of-towners have to pay an entry fee. Well worth the visit highly recommended for families.
