Cathedrale St Joseph de Noumea, Noumea

4.0
Dedicated to Saint Joseph, the Catholic Cathedrale St Joseph de Noumea serves as one the island's landmarks, dating back to the 19th century. Architects scrapped the original idea of including traditional spires fearing damage from cyclones, and instead endowed the stone building with large stained-glass windows and an intricately carved pulpit, altar panels, and confessional. Don't be discouraged if you find the main door closed upon your arrival. Make your way to the side doors, which remain unlocked throughout the day. Our Noumea trip itinerary maker makes visiting Cathedrale St Joseph de Noumea and other Noumea attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • It looked pretty grand up on the hill so stopped in for a look around. There is a bit of work going on with repairs but the peace, quiet and calmness is always worth a few minutes away from everything...  more »
  • It is a landmark in Noumea but is located on the outskirts of the city. Because it is located on a hill, it is impressive that the color of the sea jumps into the body when you leave the entrance. The inside was free to put in, and it was just 12 o'clock, so the bell rang and it was a breeze. If you want to visit Noumea, I think you can visit it at once.

  • Dedicated to Saint Joseph and built by convict labour between 1887~97 based on plans drawn up by a convict architect. Consecrated in 1893, before the towers and facade were completed, it became the seat of the Archdiocese of Nouméa in 1966. it was originally intended to add spires to the tops of the towers, but the idea was abandoned given the prevalence of cyclones in this region. A large, cool and peaceful nave in which to sit in the cool on a hot summer's afternoon.
  • A great cathedral to visit for some peace in Noumea. It also has a great view when you look back through the main doors.
