Must see · Historic Site · Tourist Spot
Explore the complex of interconnected underground Roman cemeteries, in use up to the 4th century CE, at St Paul's Catacombs. The earliest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta, the catacombs display various tomb types, like the baldacchino tombs, which are free-standing, canopied burials with grand arches and pillars. Other decorations within the catacombs include illustrations and written messages. Be advised that the catacombs are very dark, with steep stairs and uneven flooring. They may be difficult to manage for those with mobility issues or claustrophobia. Put St Paul's Catacombs at the forefront of your travel plans using our Rabat itinerary website.

  • Very impressive! Not the most positive place to visit, but an interesting experience. I wouldn't recommend this visit to families with little kids and if you are not healthy enough to go there.  more »
  • Fantastic place to visit. I thought the museum was very well done and the Catacombs were amazing to explore.  more »

  • Amazing place to visit and learn about Maltese Catacombs. This is one of the most amazing places on the island of Malta. Well worth a visit it has loads of entrances to old catacombs which lead underground. All with very informative signposting and guides to help explain what you are looking at and the history of each one. They are educational and informative and great for school age children and adults. Very often lots of small spaces to hide in appear and it can be an easy place for small children to hide to keep them close!!
  • An historic and fascinating look into a Catacombs burial complex. The Romans did not bury their dead within the city walls so these catacombs are placed outside in a labyrinth design spread over a wide area. Some of the Catacombs are quite low down and others are very humid and dirty inside some have easy access and some unfortunately fenced off. If you are a history buff, be prepared to spend at least 2 hours there. Please read all the information in the visitor centre first because there is no more information after that.
