Must see · World heritage site · Monument · Ruin
Venture into one of the very few accessible underground prehistoric structures in the world at Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. The elaborate system of subterranean chambers dates back to around 3,000 BCE and is on the World Heritage List. The site was presumably once an underground sanctuary that later turned into a necropolis. See the distinctive architecture and red ochre paintings on the walls. The site includes a visitor center that offers multimedia presentations and information about the structure and the lost civilization that built it. Due to its layout, the necropolis is not wheelchair accessible and people who suffer from claustrophobia might feel uncomfortable inside the chambers. Make a reservation online in advance, as the site is popular and space is limited. Make Hal Saflieni Hypogeum a part of your Paola vacation plans using our Paola trip itinerary planning website.

  • You have to book in advance to come here as they only allow 80 people in per day. Amazing, historic caves that go 30 feet under ground and are 5000 years old. Well worth a visit.  more »

  • If only they allowed photography. You arrive at the front of the Hypogeum and are likely to wonder whether you are in the right place. It is in the middle of a densely populated area and it's entrance is unassuming. Just remember that the majority of the tour is underground. YOU MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS IF YOU WANT TAKE THE TOUR. Amazing!
  • Very interesting historical site. Good visitor facilities. Very strict and limited on numbers of people who enter. As this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site you are not allowed to walk directly in the rooms. However, the walkways enable easy access to the most interesting areas. Nice video presentation before the tour.
