Famed as the site where the battle for Panang was lost to invading Japanese troops in 1941 during World War II, Penang War Museum sits in an old British fort built in the 1930s. The fort was originally built to protect the island against invasion from the sea, but it failed in 1941 when the Japanese attacked from inland. The fort then fell under Japanese control and was used as a prison base for torture and beheading. Today you can tour the barracks, cookhouses, and gun placements all equipped with signage. In 2002, a museum was erected in the old structure. It is filled with artifacts and features underground military tunnels and ammunition bunkers 9 m (30 ft) below ground. Penang War Museum reviews

We found it very interesting. The map they give you at the entrance is rather basic, and the red arrows painted on the ground not always easy to follow but on the whole it's pretty well done. I think.... more »
Best way to relive world war 2 era.. kudos to those who have maintained it... We spent about 2 3 hours there on our last day and headed to airport which is just 20 mins away.. Was an awesome experience.. Don't miss out
When you arrive at this museum you might think it will be a fun outing. But it is something quite different. It is a very impressive site which makes you think a lot about the atrocities of war. The site was actually used as a military barracks and fort during the second world war. You can see cannons, bunkers and escape tunnels. Some of which you can climb yourself. They do show some photos of the true horrors of war. So the place is maybe less suitable for very young children. The site is listed as one of the most haunted sites in Malaysia. This could very well be true.
