Penang War Museum, Penang

Famed as the site where the battle for Panang was lost to invading Japanese troops in 1941 during World War II, Penang War Museum sits in an old British fort built in the 1930s. The fort was originally built to protect the island against invasion from the sea, but it failed in 1941 when the Japanese attacked from inland. The fort then fell under Japanese control and was used as a prison base for torture and beheading. Today you can tour the barracks, cookhouses, and gun placements all equipped with signage. In 2002, a museum was erected in the old structure. It is filled with artifacts and features underground military tunnels and ammunition bunkers 9 m (30 ft) below ground. • When you arrive at this museum you might think it will be a fun outing. But it is something quite different. It is a very impressive site which makes you think a lot about the atrocities of war. The site was actually used as a military barracks and fort during the second world war. You can see cannons, bunkers and escape tunnels. Some of which you can climb yourself. They do show some photos of the true horrors of war. So the place is maybe less suitable for very young children. The site is listed as one of the most haunted sites in Malaysia. This could very well be true.
