Trip Planner: Asia / Malaysia / Penang / Penang Island / George Town / Reclining Buddha Wat Chaiyamangalaram
Visit the Buddhist temple Reclining Buddha Wat Chaiyamangalaram to admire its characteristically Thai design. Built in 1845 on land given by Queen Victoria as a gesture of goodwill to encourage increased trade with Thailand, the temple houses the third-largest reclining Buddha statue in the world, measuring 33 m (108 ft) in length. Walk past the flowing dragon statues at the entrance, and admire the idiosyncrasies of traditional Thai patterns and architecture on display throughout the temple. Legend has it that the first monk here was a big fan of laksa (spicy noodle soup): you will notice bowls of the local speciality laid as an offering at his shrine. Reclining Buddha Wat Chaiyamangalaram Reviews
Interesting and clean floor. Very colorful inside and outside. Dragons outside the entrance made of pieces of glass and sharp, not good for touching. more »
I first saw the reclining Buddha in 1975 and never forgot it. The return visit over 40 years later sees some changes in the building environs but not the power of this great figure. more »
A very spiritual place with a huge reclining Buddha. The place is of Thai religion and well respected. You have to take off your shoe or slipper at the entrance to enter. Inside you are able to walk around to pray and look at the history. Nice place to be.
One of the island's main tourist attractions with a giant Sleeping Buddha spanning the width of the temple. The entrance is "guarded" by two beautiful dragons in glass & mosaic. Best to visit on a weekday as the place is packed with tourists during weekends.
