Trip Planner: Asia / Japan / Kyushu / Saga Prefecture / Kanzaki-gun / Yoshinogari-cho / Yoshinogari Historical Park
At Yoshinogari Historical Park, you can explore the outstanding archaeological site, believed to be the earliest example of state government in the country. Beneath the ground here, archaeologists have uncovered elevated store houses, dozens of pit dwellings, and over 2,000 tombs, making it the largest and most important site in Japan, and an indispensable location for those who want to learn about the Yayoi period. Across the multiple ditch-and-palisade protected settlements, you can inspect and enter most of the reconstructed buildings, with some containing artifacts salvaged from the site. Near to the central settlement (thought to be where the ruling class would have resided), you'll find a museum filled with more artifacts and packed with information, with detailed English language translations. You can grab a meal at the saga restaurant on site, though it's worthwhile bringing along some water and snacks to sustain you as you explore the large park. Yoshinogari Historical Park Reviews
I greatly enjoyed my visit to Yoshinogari historical park. Firstly, out from yoshinogarikoen Station, you can walk to the park with clear signage given along the way. Secondly, there is free shuttle..... more »
Drove out here from Sasebo on a rainy May Day (1hr 15 min drive). Luckily, the park had little museums along the footpaths and straw huts (the featured attraction) to duck into when the rain was too.... more »
A really large site, takes at least 3 hours to visit. Well preserved and full of information. A place worth visiting if you are interested in history. Within walking distance from JR station.
If you are traveling by car, follow the signs for the East entrance once you get into town. That is the easiest access point. The park is essentially a reconstruction of a nation-state that existed during the Yayoi period. The park is actually pretty big and you can enter most of the reconstructed buildings. There are also activity centers and museums throughout the park.
