A relatively young addition to the area's landscape, Showashinzan was created naturally in 1943, after lava broke through the ground after a series of strong earthquakes. Today, the 398 m (1,306 ft) tall mountain, which often lets out volcanic steam, represents a major tourist attraction. Take the ropeway to the top of Mt. Usu, another area attraction, or enjoy the walking trail with panoramic vistas of the surrounding nature, Pacific Ocean, and Lake Toya. Plan your visit to Showashinzan and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Sobetsu-cho online tour planner.
