Kaikyokan, Shimonoseki

4.2
#1 of 14 in Zoos & Aquariums in Chugoku
At Kaikyokan you can observe and inspect a wealth of marine life, including displays of puffer fish from all over the world. The aquarium also houses a collection of Humboldt penguins whose clumsy, sometimes comical demeanor transforms to grace and agility when viewed from below the surface. You'll also have the chance to watch dolphin and sea lion shows, as they re-enact a famous offshore samurai battle with their trainers, along with displays dedicated to colorful coral habitats, and those of the tidal flats. Owing to the region's obsession with the culinary delicacy of puffer fish, otherwise known as fugu, the puffer fish exhibit attracts lrge crowds, featuring around 100 different species. Bear in mind that during the winter months, the outdoor dolphin show can get cold, so dress accordingly. • I waited quite a bit to get into the parking lot. The penguin was cute. You may be able to see it slowly on weekdays.

  • There are a lot of penguins and puffs. Penguins can be seen in both the cold country king penguins and the South American Humboldt penguins. There are a lot of kinds of puffer puffing.

  • This an awesome aquarium, liked all of the fish exhibits, would have loved it if the coelacanth on display was alive instead of preserved. There were some pretty neat variations of puffy fish throughout the facility. Also if your are interested there is a fish market just a few minutes walk away if you want to try puffer fish as well.
  • Those who do not care about animal abuse might enjoy this place and feel good. I hate to see dolfins, sea lions, penguins and all other sea animals cooped up under poor conditions.
