Hashima Island, Nagasaki

#2 of 7 in Nature in Nagasaki
Island · Nature / Park
Abandoned since 1974, the concrete blocks of buildings on Hashima Island, a World Heritage Site, stand as silent witnesses to the island’s unsettling history. Noted for its underwater coal mines, the tiny islet off the coast of Nagasaki was the site of a forced labor camp for Chinese POW’s and Korean civilians. They were residents of the now ruined apartment blocks, once the most densely populated space in the world. Take a guided tour of the ghost town surrounded by sea, and discover the remnants of the once bustling blocks, worn down by the harsh weather and forces of nature. • As part of a day-long visit to Nagasaki, this comprised the Main Event - a boat trip out here to Hashima Island or Gunkanjima or 'Battleship Island' - 40/45 mins out and 40/45 back with 30 in...  more »
  • Nice harbor cruise en route to Gunkanjima. Book direct at the harbor office for the 9 or 13 departures. Right now only Japanese guidance is offered which limits the learning from the experience.  more »
  • YouTube brought me here. The abandoned Starbucks brought tears to my eyes. The green marque now fading like hot steam rising above the goats milk froth from a creamy triple mocha doodle.
  • I liked it because the way it looked and because of the history of the island made it so much more unique and interesting.
