A history enthusiast should not miss a tour of Dejima, the restored site of what was once a manmade island, and Japan's only window into the outside world during the Edo period. Originally built for Portuguese missionaries, the fan-shaped artificial island quickly became a Dutch trading port and, for centuries, the only place in Japan that had contact with other parts of the world. Although not an island anymore, the site offers you a chance to admire restored historic buildings that the traders used, and even sample the "Western cuisine" of that era. Arrange your visit to Dejima and discover more family-friendly attractions in Nagasaki using our Nagasaki route maker website.

Excellent reproduction of history between Japan and the West. Really gives you a sense of a true trade balance that endured here amidst the exploitation waged by European powers across the rest of the world at the time. A credit to Japan and the Netherlands. Recommend immersing yourself for 2 to 3 hours. The English language coverage is extensive and very well narrated.

Living history brought back in Nagasaki. I enjoyed it tremendously. It is a beautiful place with a decent historical context. There are not many places that remind so vividly to Japans history. If you can also visit Hirado.
