Japan's Imperial Family's offical Residence until 1868, when they moved to Tokyo. Kyoto, up until that point, was The Capital and that is why it is still very much a low-rise City, with lots of... more »

Unfortunately we couldn't go inside any of the buildings, but still had a nice day out. One thing I would recommend to do is download the free app to your phone that tells you more of the history of.... more »

Such a beautiful place to visit and totally worth it! This place is my go to whenever I visit Kyoto. I believe there’s a free tour going around most of the buildings in Japanese (maybe in English too). The tour I had was extremely informative last time and I really enjoyed it. It’s much more interesting than learning Japanese history at school. I’d recommend whoever wants to visit here to sort of have knowledge of general Japanese history, so that you’ll find this place more interesting. There’s free lockers available so you can leave your unnecessary stuff like souvenirs or other things that you don’t want to carry when going around this place!

Very nice place for a stroll. There is a guided path that takes you through the place, past the many buildings and several beautiful gardens. I could spend many hours in this place. Entrance is also free, but the number of visitors allowed is limited. Next to the entrance there is a room showing a movie about the palace which is worth watching
