Koyasan Okunoin, Koya-cho

Explore Japan’s largest cemetery, Koyasan Okunoin, situated on Mount Koya among tall, ancient cedar trees. Cross the first bridge to enter the cemetery, which houses over 200,000 tombstones, and enjoy a peaceful 2 km (1.2 mi) walk to the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi’s eternal meditation. Wander between tombs of all shapes and sizes, some covered in moss and some more recent, including the final resting places of important lords and monks. You can also take a shorter path passing by a recent cemetery expansion and view a memorial to pests, which was erected by an exterminator company. Using our custom trip planner, Koya-cho attractions like Koyasan Okunoin can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • In the back of Koyasan, there is a mausoleum of Kobo Daishi Kukai. There are many tombstones and monuments on the approach, ranging from famous people to the common people.

  • We did a guided tour with a local guide to Okunoin Cemetery, but the truth doesn't seem like what it is. It is full of large sculptures representing the burials of the most powerful families the bigger they are. There are also tombs of large companies... We toured the cemetery to the temple of Kukai, monk q according to his beliefs I enter the nirvana and it is still alive. It is not a regular cemetery, if you visit Koyasan, you have to visit a part of it at least!
