Beppu Tower, Beppu

#24 of 110 in Things to do in Beppu
Observation Deck · Tourist Spot
A stark example of Japan's unique post-war modernization, Beppu Tower still stands as the city's prime landmark. This 100 m (330 ft) tall former television transmission tower gives visitors a 360-degree view of the area. Built in 1957 and once a technological marvel, the structure shows how architecture of a country can be modern without being westernized. A curious photo exhibition on the 17th floor documents the tower's history, showing images of many Japanese celebrities who visited in the past.
