Admire the historical grandeur of Venice combined with an impressive collection of artwork at Ca' d'Oro. The magnificent Gothic palace was built in the 15th century as home to the influential Contarini family. It remained in private hands until the early 20th century, when its last owner, an avid art collector named Giorgio Franchetti, transferred it to the Italian state. A great architectural monument, the palace still houses Franchetti's collection, which includes the works of artists such as Titian, Jan van Eyck, and Anthony van Dyck. You'll find guided tours of the palace in different languages both for groups and individual visitors, but you'll want to book them in advance. We were lucky: the most beautiful part (at least according to us) of the Ca' d'Oro, that is, the salon on the ground floor, attached to the garden, with beautiful mosaics, was closed due to flooding but was temporarily reopened just the moment we arrived. A wonder: it seems to enter a fairy tale and we must heartfeltly thank that small group of angels who have been busy all day to clean it up. The rest of the museum is also remarkable: you can admire classic paintings and works of modern art in an exceptional setting. The view from the balconies is also beautiful: we recommend visiting in the late afternoon or in the dark, which allows you to appreciate the light games.View original -
I loved this museum and what the installations installed for the Biennale. The Palazzo itself is beautiful and worth a visit (oh the views), don't miss the gardens with the gorgeous tile work. The art... more »

The place is amazing. Lots of well preserved history. The entrance fee is not very expensive. The views and the experience is well worth it. Imagine yourself standing there where people used to and looking at that fabulous, remarkable canal. The entrance is a bit difficult to find. It's in between two buildings so look carefully there is a sign.

I wasn't a big fan of the art collection and would say to leave this for last if you have time; Venice has better to offer. There are a few pieces that were a treat to see (and some by well-known artists) but there were many lesser works by lesser known artists. There was also some more modern art as recent as the current year I visited. It was nice to see them trying to have a variety but I wasn't a huge fan of most the modern art pieces. My favorite thing was the large mosaic floor in the courtyard of the ground floor which we almost missed. It's really excellent. Also be sure to go out to the outdoor balcony to get a peek at the Grand Canal. I believe this place takes credit cards for tickets but the machine was broken when I went so had to use cash. They offered to hold my backpack for free. Not sure if that's normal or even mandatory. And don't buy tickets online because there won't be any line and you can save money on the booking fee.
