Must see · World heritage site · Landmark · Tourist Spot
The unquestioned heart of the city since the middle of the 12th century, Piazza del Campo was built on the site of a former Roman marketplace. This historic public space is one of Europe's greatest medieval squares, renowned for its beauty and architectural integrity. A twice-yearly horse race, the Palio, has been held around the piazza's edges for several centuries. The square is surrounded by several palaces, the most notable of which was erected in the 13th century as the centerpiece of this shell-shaped space. The piazza's striking pavement, made of red bricks arranged in a fishbone pattern, attracts passing tourists and local students. Most visitors pack around the white marble fountain designed and built by Jacopo della Quercia, a notable sculptor of the Renaissance period. • A huge circular square with sloping sides is an amazing bustle of activity that’s so interesting to watch from any of the many restaurants located on it’s periphery. We sat in a very nice pizzeria...  more »
  • Another must see place in Siena. It is good to take coffee and very tasty ice creams and to sit for a while to observe locals and tourists walking around. Beautiful place to take good photos.  more »

  • Siena is a wonderful place with style and history. Piazza del Campo is a great place for eating, drinking and watching the world go by. If you're feeling energetic, climb to the top of the tower for views of the surrounding countryside. By Irish standards, Tuscany offers great scenery, terrific wines / food and excellent value. If you haven't been....go now.
  • Wow what an amazing view. The history of this place is amazing, you can see where the horse races took place. The atmosphere is perfect and the people are friendly. The tower is so old but still looks so beautiful. There are plenty of places to eat and drink something.
