Built to commemorate the founder of the Jesuit order, the 17th-century Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola features an interior with gilded ornaments, marble reliefs, and remarkable frescoes. Admire the church's Baroque facade before heading inside to study the fresco glorifying St. Ignatius. Covering the ceiling of the nave, it creates an optical illusion of a dome. You can wander the plaza where the church is located to see examples of Rococo architecture.
Beautiful Baroque-style Chiesa, incidentally, one of the most beautiful churches I have visited in Rome. It is located near the Pantheon. Beautiful architecture and paintings. Must.
ラテン十字の交差部の天井は、もとも... more »In 1626, cardinal Ludovico Ludovish built it in honor of Ignatius Loyola, the Spanish man who founded the Jeezs. Like jess church at jesss' headquarters, the interior is over-decorated with colourful precious stones, marble and gold plating. There is an altar with a splendid stucco decoration. It is gorgeous and cheerful, but there is no atmosphere like the place of the training of the spirit at all. The best thing about this church is the trick paintings on the ceiling. The ceiling at the intersection of the Latin Cross was originally planned to be made by a coupola like the Jess Church, but the plan did not come true. Then, Jeezan is Andrea Pozzo painted a 17m-diameter cupola as an anamorphism painting. It looks as if the cupola exists. However, compared to the bright shining that the fresco of the surrounding might have been repaired, this place does not seem to have been repaired, and it does not look well in the dark color tone. I can't think of it from the beginning. It will be repaired before long. On the ceiling of the inner camp was also painted by Andrea Pozzo with frescoes of "The Allegory of jethales of the Jeess." This ceiling painting, which spans a total area of 750 m2, makes full use of perspective, creating the illusion of climbing to the heavens.
An image is worth a thousand words. Here you have three thousand words. These pictures say more than I could say. The details in this church are unbelievable. It is hard to belive people were able to build such a beautiful church in 1650. I recommend reading a bit about this church before visiting it!
I am not usually one for visiting Churches (or any religious venue) but we ended up popping into this one by accident and I am glad we did. It is absolutely stunning, with a beautiful structure covered in mesmerising paintings from the ground to the top of the dome. It had my 4-year-old asking me how on earth they managed to to make such a beautiful building without cranes and diggers- I had no answer other than to say ‘magic’. 😂 Needless to say, well worth a quick visit in between Pantheon and Trevi Fountains.
