Capital of Italian Food Valley

Parma is famous for its prosciutto, cheese, and architecture. Home to one of the oldest universities in the world, the city is divided into two parts by the river Parma--actually a large stream that often goes dry. Virtually everything in Parma's historic city center is within easy walking distance. The centerpiece is a large Romanesque cathedral noted for its bell tower, which dates back to the 13th century, and its dome, whose fresco was painted by Correggio. Parma's terrain is mostly flat, so bicycling is popular with locals and tourists. Parking can be a challenge in the downtown area, so it's best to explore this part of the city on foot or by public transportation. Use our Italy trip planner to arrange the hows, wheres, and whens of your trip to Parma.
