Monumental Cemetery, Milan

4.7
Admire artistic tombs at Monumental Cemetery, a large cemetery opened in 1866. Several of the tombs were designed by renowned artists. Enter through the large, Neo-medieval-style Famedio that contains the tombs of some of Italy's most honored citizens. Look for the exhibit of prints, photographs, and maps outlining the cemetery's historical development. Next, wander through the cemetery to discover both contemporary and classical Italian sculptures, as well as Greek temples, elaborate obelisks, and more. Visit the Civico Mauoleo Palanti to see the memorial built for 800 Milanese killed in Nazi concentration camps. • Very interesting and charming. I highly recommend. A place of art that amazes the visitor. You can go it alone or take advantage of a guided tour with explanation of the most important tombs of famous men or works of famous architects

  • The aptly named Monumental Cemetery is just that. The huge facade hides scores of family mausoleums each larger and more ornate than the next. Full of the elite of Milan.  more »

  • This building does not look like your typical mausoleum with it's raised center structure and 'wings' going off in either direction. The top gallery both left and right are filled with crypts, statues and monuments. This is were some of Milan's most note worth citizens are entombed with honor. There are a number of placards detailing information on the deceased and the artists who designed their final resting place.
  • I’d seen this place online and wanted to visit, but my husband wasn’t too keen. We popped in on our way out of Milan and I have to say I am very glad we did! It is very calm and peaceful to walk around and admire all of the different monuments. Didn’t take any pictures here as it felt a bit disrespectful, but it was lovely to see fresh flowers on so many monuments! Deffo must visit - even just for a half hour walk around
