The Baptistery of St. John, Florence

4.6
The Baptistery of St. John is one of the oldest buildings in the city, constructed between 1059 and 1128. It's renowned for the three sets of bronze doors. Observe how the eight lower panels of the south doors depict the virtues of hope, faith, charity, humility, fortitude, temperance, justice, and prudence. The most famous set, the east doors, are a copy; the originals are being preserved in the Duomo's museum. You still get a sense of their importance and you can admire the depiction of "The Story of Joseph." Inside the baptistery, be sure to look up at the domed, mosaic ceiling. • Timetables (seven days out of seven)-8,15-10,15-11,15-18,30 Price: Single ticket €18 (Duomo crypt, Museo del Duomo, Campanile, Cupola) One of the most beautiful and imposing baptigiers in Italy. Its dome internally is completely covered with gold mosaics and externally it was a model and inspiration for the dome of the cathedral. Symbol of Florence and monument not to be missed!

  • The baptistery of San Giovanni is another of the Florentine jewels that embellishes Piazza del Duomo and blends perfectly with the rest of the monimenti.

  • The ceiling is amazing. Looks much smaller inside than out. There Is a lot of scaffolding up at the moment around the walls for restoration work but still a remarkable place well worth a visit
  • It's the baptismal hall right next to Duumo. It is the baptismal hall, which has the so-called Gate of Heaven. Because there are many people in Duomo, you can visit it in the early hours and enjoy a very comfortable view of the interior. There are parts that don't feel like pictures, so it's a good idea to go in and look around. There are also a lot of vendors around. If you don't need anything, you'd better avoid it.
