  • Usually monuments are set in honor of victories. However, this monument was erected in 1902 in memory of the soldiers of the army of Garibaldi who fell in the battle of the village of Monterodondo...  more »
  • We walked past this monument and it was kind of cool. It shows the realities of struggle but yet with a gun. I understand the reason for it but it kind of misses the mark in today’s society...  more »

  • I actually really like this square and area around it. Behind it is shopping area.
  • This monument is located in Piazza Menta, on the banks of the Arno, very close to Ponte alle Grazie. It pays homage to the Italian soldiers fallen in the battles of Minta and Monterotondo, which took place in 1867 in the vicinity of the capital, facing the French forces with the Garibaldianas troops. The bronze sculpture group, the work of Oreste Calzolari, was inaugurated in 1902, and represents two Garibaldianos soldiers; One of them, standing up, tries to defend himself from the enemy while helping his dying partner, who is still able to hold the flagpole. On the pedestal we can see a dedication inscription and two bronze bas-reliefs alluding to the aforementioned battles. It is a composition with a great strength, worthy that we stop for a few minutes to contemplate it.
