  • Great collection of ancient art. Quite
  • A ticket to the Brancacci Chapel includes entry to the Salvatore Romano Foundation. He was an antique dealer and collector. In 1946 he donated about 70 pieces of his collection to Florence so they could be displayed in the former Refectory of Santo Spirito. He arranged the works himself and the municipal authorities had to agree to respect his wishes in perpetuity that they not be rearranged. He is buried in a sarcophagus in the refectory. No doubt keeping an eye open to ensure nothing is noved... ever. It is somewhat an eclectic mixture and includes a number of column capitals and other broken bits and pieces. The reason we wanted to see the room was due to its original role as a refectory (cenacolo). It has the remnants of a full wall fresco by Andrea di Cione (known as Orcagna), probably in collaboration with his brother, Nardo, executed between 1360 and 1366. Above is a crucifixion and below was the Last Supper. While most of the crucifixion is intact (although quite faded) the Last Supper consists of two apostles and the haloes of two others. The rest of the work was lost when an entrance punched through it to the building next door.
