Set on a hill nearly 300 m (984 ft) high near Bologna, Santuario di Madonna di San Luca features a basilica built over six centuries housing an icon of the Virgin Mary. Pass through 3.5 km (2.17 mi) of roofed arcades built over the basilica's path. The church's ornate interior includes grand pillars and intricate frescoes.   • Very impressive place, verycolorful and worth visiting. I guess the best way to get there is on foot... but it goes up... and up... and up! There is a parking area on the top (drive up to teh...  more »
  • We drove up here from the centre of Bologna, and it took about 15 minutes to navigate the windy, scenic roads. The views from the top are incredible, especially of the surrounding countryside. If you want to get the best views of the Sanctuary itself then they can be seen from 50 m down the road and back towards Bologna. There is also a toilet that can be used with a €0.5 donation.
  • A beautiful and historic church located outside of Bologna. We took the local city bus to visit here, with the journey and accompanying audio guide being very good. The church itself was closed when we arrived so we explored the grounds until it opened. The exterior alone is impressive and the upper levels allow for magnificent views. While Bologna has many impressive church's this has to be one of the most, if not the most spectacular and moving. The frescos are true works of art. Go on a week day to experience it with fewer people.
