Reynisfjara Beach, Vik

#2 of 9 in Beaches in Iceland
Beach · Nature / Park
Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful black-sand beaches in the world, Reynisfjara Beach frames the amazing landscape notable for the basalt sea stacks called Gardar. Legend has it that these rock formations are two petrified trolls, turned to stone after an unsuccessful attempt to pull a ship out of the sea. The sky over the sea can turn from dark and cloudy to sunny in a matter of minutes. Watch out for strong and unpredictable waves--the beach has seen some fatal accidents. • Very big black beach with stunning views - lots of puffins and impressive geologic formations. Beware of extremely dangerous waves - not too close to the water and children away from the water, even.....  more »
  • Amazing nature and you may wonder if it is really trolls who made these basalt cliffs. Anyway photogenic and goes well with the extremely fine black lava sand.  more »

  • A beautiful beach, black as the night. We were lucky with the weather and the waves. But do not underestimate the power of the sea and play with the waves... There is a reason why Icelanders call it 'Chinese take-away'!
  • It’s definitely a tourist hotspot and I’ve seen plenty of folks with this atypical photo on their desktop. But it’s still not to be missed, it’s a serene place with a dark twist of the ends of the earth and rough tides.
