Get a window into the Iceland of the past at Skogar Museum. What started as a humble private collection more than half a century ago has developed into a true museum. See historical houses and workshops, a consecrated church, and a schoolhouse. The collection of artifacts includes authentic pieces of furniture, tools, home appliances, handicrafts, and, of course, fishing boats, which have always played an important role in Iceland's economy. The latest addition to the complex, the Museum of Transport, tells the story of communication technology development in Iceland. If you're visiting with a larger group, make a reservation in advance. Skogar Museum is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Skogar Edition.

The trouble with traveling off season, is you miss some stuff :( But these turf houses were worth stopping to see. We could peer in the windows and they just looked really interesting. Perhaps one day... more »
It‘s three in one, you see the technical museum, the folk museum and an open air museum. It is not expensive (15€ p.P.) and you can spend a few hours there. We really liked it, it‘s interesting and yo... more »
Amazing! The outdoor portion of this museum show how Icelandic people lived over the years in various original homes. The Transportation & Communication building shows how modern Icelandic people lived through various (what I call) ‘hoarding exhibits’. Example, every cell phone you’ve ever owned neatly displayed and arranged on a wall. Automated displays that show real life scenarios of how people did their jobs. I was awe struck by how well this museum was put together. Definitely a must see.
This is a great little museum with enough English signage to understand what you are looking at. Better than the museums we saw in the city, as more topics were covered. It's also the only indoor entertainment for many miles, which is convenient when you go to see the waterfall but don't want to spend all day outside in freezing rain with winds over 30 mph.
