Gljúfrafoss, Hvolsvollur

4.9
Gljúfrafoss or Gljúfrabúi ("one who lives in the canyon") is a small waterfall north of the larger falls of Seljalandsfoss in Iceland. The falls are partially obscured by the cliff rock, but hikers can follow a trail to enter the narrow canyon where the water plummets to a small pool. There is also a winding trail nearby and a wooden staircase to enable sightseers to climb roughly halfway up and view the falls from another perspective.

  • Go here. Bring your waterproof clothes, you will get soaked. Walking inside highly recommended, the cave around the bottom of the waterfall is otherworldly.
  • After following the signs to the water fall you will have a very limited view. However, if you follow the water upstream, climbing over the rocks in the water underneath a rocky overhang, you will be treated to a beautiful up close view of the fall, with the sun illuminating the water from above.
