Geothermal Exhibition, Hveragerdi

#5 of 12 in Things to do in Hveragerdi
The Geothermal Energy Exhibition at Hellisheiði Power Plant is an exploration into the utilization of geothermal energy in Iceland. The Hellisheiði Power Plant, owned by ON Power, is a great example of how geothermal energy can be utilized in a sustainable manner and is a showcase for geothermal’s global role in a renewable and sustainable future. We are situated 25 km. from downtown Reykjavík:

Jarðhitasýning ON í Hellisheiðarvirkjun veitir innsýn í virkjun og nýtingu jarðvarma á Íslandi. Á sýningunni er jarðfræði, tækni og saga sett fram á aðgengilegan og skýran hátt með myndum og margmiðlunartækni. Starfsmenn veita upplýsingar og eru reiðubúnir að fylgja gestum um sýninguna.

  • Interesting to those who want to know how geothermal energy is put into good use in Iceland. Renewable power sources make up ~70% of the total primary energy consumption in Iceland, much higher than anywhere else in the world. It is actually a real power plant, not just an exhibition. Kids were thrilled to turn all possible cranks in the exhibition part obviously.
  • Interesting and perhaps the only geo thermal power plant in the area open to public. You need to b purchase an entrance ticket that normally comes with a tour. The tours start on the hour and we caught it a few minutes late. The tour guide provides basic overview of the location and operations. The tour is about 20 minutes long and ends with two short videos after which you can roam around specified areas. There is a basic gift shop at the lobby with the usual Iceland tourist kitsch and a cafe.
