Akureyrarkirkja or The Church of Akureyri is a prominent Lutheran church at Akureyri in northern Iceland. Located in the centre of the city, and towering above the city on a hill, it was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson (1887–1950) and completed in 1940.
Akureyrarkirkja contains a notably large 3200-pipe organ, a unique interpretation of the crucifixion and a suspended ship hanging from the ceiling which reflects an old Nordic tradition of giving offerings for the protection of loved ones at sea. The bas-reliefs on the nave balcony are by sculptor Asmundur Sveinsson (1893–1982). The altarpiece dates to 1863 and was designed by Danish artist Edvard Lehmann (1815-1892). The windows were designed and made by J. Wippel & Co. of Enxeter, Devon. England.

The Italian white marble baptismal font is made by Florentine sculptor Corrado Vigni (1888-1956). The angel baptismal font is a replica of a work by noted Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844). The original work is situated at Copenhagen Cathedral (Vor Frue Kirke) .

  • Really lovely church, long stair case up to it. The external architecture is very interesting, inside the church is quite simplistic and minimalistic. Great view over the city and the fjord. This...  more »

  • Quick a number of steps up to the church but you will get a good view of Akureyri from the top. Nothing really special about this church. glass windows and a proper church organ. Did not feel very welcome as the Uncle was more interested in putting out a "close the door" sign. Does not smile at greetings.
  • Nice walk up the steps and beutifull inside with the stained glass. Great view from the top and looking at the history. Clock was 5 minutes fast but can't really complain about that
