The tenth-century builders of Chateau de La Roche-Guyon dug the castle into a limestone cliff that overlooks the Seine. It was impossible to see the castle from the river, yet the castle had a wide view of the valley--making it an ideal defensive structure for medieval warfare. The manor house that stands today was built in the 12th century and continued to serve this purpose right up through World War II, when German Field Marshall Rommel made the castle his headquarters. The castle itself is beautiful and so is the surrounding village which is quiet and relaxing to walk around. The castle is built on huge chalk cliffs making the hike up challenging but well worth it. If you are going to Normandy or to Monet's garden in Giverny, La Roche-Guyon is well worth it and I liked it better that Giverny- much less crowded and history is more interesting than art anyway.
