Saint Catherine's Catholic Church
the largest church made out of wood in France, Saint Catherine's Catholic Church is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. A wooden sculpture shows her holding a wheel and a sword. The first nave is the oldest part of the building, dating to the second half of the 15th century. It was built using naval construction techniques, which gives the impression of an upside-down ship's hull. In the 16th century, a second nave was added, whose vault was like the wooden vaults of modest Gothic churches. The famous "axe masters" of the city’s naval yards created this lovely building without using any saws, just like their Norman ancestors and the Vikings before them. There's a bell tower separate from the principal building. Make Saint Catherine's Catholic Church a part of your Honfleur vacation plans using our Honfleur day trip site.

Saint Catherine's Catholic Church reviews
-
Grand looks from outside. The church inside is very different story as symmetry is not maintained, askewed benches and cheap fag decorations of nylon. more »

Church made by the fishermen of Honfleur. Made with a lot of wood, which makes it very special. Also a special chapel for the fishermen, with boatmodels. more »

Unlike any other church that you're likely to visit, this one is built entirely of timber. The ceiling looks like 2 inverted wooden boats. It's much more sparsely decorated and darker than most churches, but also warmer. The separate (it's across the road) bell tower is also different and rather unique. Well worth a visit.

I have to admit I went there because eit started pouring down. Best rain of the week for sure. The place is quite small but the fact that it's made from wood because of the fact that at the time of the reconstruction, people did not put it as a priority and decided to use the cheapest materials possible (aka wood) is pretty interesting to me. We always think that religion was the most important thing in the past, especially under some Kings' influence, and here we are. Really interesting to visit this place after years of coming but mot being able to get inside (weddings/funeral/baptisms/else)
