The Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, Xi'an

4.6
#1 of 1,187 in Museums in China
The Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses boasts a collection of over 8,000 carved soldiers and horses. The figures in this World Heritage Site were buried in the 3rd century BCE with the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, to protect him in the afterlife. The thousands of life-size soldiers stand at attention as an imperial army would in real life. Look for remains of the paint that originally lacquered each statue. • By car it is just over an hour's drive from Xi'an to the excavation site. We visited the Terracotta Army with a guided small group, which was exactly the right decision to make it a stress-free experience. Our guide has pointed out the best views in the 3 exhibition halls and explained the history. He knew abbreviations so that we could bypass the sometimes long queues and thus had more time for the visit. The largest hall 1 provides an impressive sight and 1 hour is short to see everything. Halls 2 and 3 are smaller and darker but no less impressive. The museum shows the originals of the two Stitwäges and needs all the strength in the crowds. It is followed by a large area of stalls with food and souvenir shops.
