The summer palace of Dalai Lamas and a World Heritage Site, Norbulingka (Precious Stone Garden) features 374 mansions and classical Tibetan gardens. Spanning some 36 hectares (89 acres) and considered the greatest man-made garden in Tibet, it was built in 1755 on a hot springs spot. The palace features highly scenic and intricate garden designs with ponds, as well as a mini-zoo with bears, lions, and monkeys. Feast your eyes on the flower patterns and nuances, matched only by the brightly colored facades and ornaments on the pavilions and shrines. Stroll along paved paths and stone bridges by yourself, or consider hiring an informative guide to explain the rich history behind the buildings and sculptures. • Summer residences of the Dalai Lamas started by the seventh Dalai Lama. The 14th Dalai Lama also has his residence built here in the 50's, though he's in exile.
  • Norbulingka is a palace and surrounding park in Lhasa, Tibet, China, built from 1755. It served as the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas from the 1780s up until the 14th Dalai Lama's exile in 1959. Part of the "Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace", Norbulingka is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was added as an extension of this Historic Ensemble in 2001. It was built by the 7th Dalai Lama and served both as administrative centre and religious centre. It is a unique representation of Tibetan palace architecture. [SOURCE: Wikipedia]
