Orongo, Easter Island

4.8
#2 of 9 in Nature in Easter Island
Perched high on a rim of a giant crater, Orongo served as a ceremonial center for the cult of the "Birdman," a divinity of the Rapa Nui people. The stone village features 53 windowless, round-walled buildings and a series of rocks inscribed with petroglyphs depicting curled-up human figures with birds' heads. See the cliff from which Rapa Nui chiefs jumped off into the ocean following the quest for the egg of the sacred bird that nested on the islet of Motu Nui. The path on the outskirts of the village, which disappears into the lush vegetation, will take you around the crater's edge. • On one side the crater of the volcano Ranu Kau where and stood the ceremonial village of Orongo, the other this islet called Motu Nui. There, in the spring of the time Rapa Nui happened the competition/ceremonial of the bird men where they participated in a ritual where they swam to this small island and climbed their cliffs the search for the egg of the migratory bird Manutara. It was thus, at the time Rapa Nui who were the next leaders, the one who returned first with the egg was the chosen!

  • Archaeological site containing some amazing recreated traditional shelter structures from the native community in the original village. Located next to a massive crater where the traditional egg hunts are held by racing from the top of the cliff to a small island and then back. Contains an immense amount of history combined with a relatively undisturbed and uninhabited geological area.
  • Such a trip! And so beautiful too. The volcano is absolutely gorgeous and the history is something else!
