Varna Archaeological Museum houses the oldest gold treasure in the world, dating back to 4600 to 4200 BCE. You can view more than 2,000 golden objects, including a golden scepter, the symbol of a monarch's power. Among the museum's collection of more than 100,000 artifacts, you can examine ceramics, coins, cult items, a golden necropolis, icons, jewelry, and weapons. Exhibits are categorized by historical periods: prehistoric, Thracian, ancient, medieval, Ottoman, and Bulgarian National Revival. On your way to the exhibition halls, note the decorated walls of the corridor that surrounds the building. The museum also houses a library, children's education museum, gift shop, and cafeteria. Varna Archaeological Museum reviews
Well-presented, with lots of regional artefacts. Many of the items come from ancient graves, and they include the oldest known worked gold. We covered it in less than hour - didn't have longer - but.... more »
Excellent medium-sized archeological museum. Most of the exhibits are from the Varna Acropolis, but there are also many interesting ancient Greek and ancient Roman exhibits, as well as a large... more »
The museum is well laid out, starting one in the earliest of times and walking up through successive ages, all with local finds. Along with the most ancient of golden jewelry, the thought that all these artifacts came from right around Varna is amazing. Exhibits are documented in better English than I expected for a provincial museum. Staff is hands off, which is nice for looking at things closely. Only drawbacks are lack of central cooling (but they did offer space coolers at regular intervals) and my perennial gripe about even the best of museums: no where to sit and take a load off of museum feet!
Loved it. I couldn't believe some of the gold artifacts with the level of detail were from the 3rd century BC. Museum closes at 5pm and there is ample parking for free in the streets to the right of town square. I would say a complete tour will take you two hours. Entrance fee in Sept 19 was 10 lev per person.
