The Rotunda Church of St George, Sofia

4.4
Hear priests chant in the old Slavic language and sing Byzantine music while performing the daily liturgy at The Rotunda Church of St George. The Romans built the red-brick rotunda--the oldest building in Sofia--in the fourth century CE, presumably on the site of a pagan temple. A modern hotel was built around the church in the 1950s, and in the courtyard you can see the contrast between the opulence of the huge hotel and the humility of the small church. The church is famous for its 12th- to 14th-century frescoes. Twenty-two large figures of prophets crown the central dome around the image of Christ. As you exit the church, wander around the neighboring ruins of the ancient town of Serdika. Plan my Sofia trip by asking Inpirock to come up with tips and suggestions.

  • In the courtyard of the presidential palace is the oldest building in the city, the rotunda of St. George surrounded by ruins of the city of Serdica. The building was built by the Romans under Emperor Constantine in the 4th century as a cylindrical domed building on a square pedestal. The church building is believed to have been built on the site of a former pagan temple. It is famous for the frescoes inside, the oldest are 1,000 years old. In the dome there are two-metre-high representations of 22 prophets. It was painted over during Ottoman rule in Bulgaria when the church was used as a mosque. In the 20th century, the frescoes were uncovered and restored. You can find more about Sofia's sights on my website toeightycountries.com.

  • It is among the oldest orthodox Christian temples in Sofia and thus has a intriguing architecture and structure. Definitely worth a visit. It is situated within the presidency building cloister, a high security area.
  • beautiful church in a modern area, they are both integrated well into the area and the contrast between the church (historical) and the modern area is very nice to look at and see. Nearby/under there is archaeological sites
