See what may be the largest collection of Orthodox icons in Europe at St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral, as well as a piece of St. Alexander Nevski's rib. The second biggest Orthodox cathedral in the Balkans, this church can hold 10,000 people, and its golden, neo-Byzantine domes can be seen from miles away. The cathedral's luxurious interior is decorated with Italian marble, Brazilian onyx, and alabaster. See murals, marble iconostasis, pulpit, and patriarchal throne. The temple was built in honor of the Russian Tsar Alexander II, whose army liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The various icons are inside the crypt. St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral Reviews
Visst, fin katedral men trist med betalning för att själv ta foto. Sur tant som jagade folk som tog kort med sina mobiler. Kostade då man ville ta kort. more »Sure, Nice cathedral but sad with payment to take photo yourself. Sour aunt who hunted people who took cards with their mobiles. Cost when you wanted to take cards.
Enjoyed a very pleasant visit. Beautiful and very thought provocing. Really worth a visit. Would have enjoyed better if locals had smiled. City seems a very sombre place. Cheer up please more »
Nice piece of Eastern European architecture here in Sofia, a short walk from the centre. The golden dimes are amazing when they catch the sunlight. You are able to go into the church for free and look around the intricately painted walls and ceilings, but to take photos or videos of the inside you must pay a small fee at the entrance. You can also buy candles to light inside. Definitely worth a look as it’s really quite beautiful.
Magnificent Architecture and a Cathedral that definitely worth a visit. Located in city centre of Sofia, walking distance from metro/train station. You’ll be amazed with the beauty of it in every angle. As you can see on how much photos I took :). Very peaceful and it’s also good not to take photos inside as sign of respect. Just pray and see it to yourself the actual beauty of it. Beautiful paintings, colourful and well decorated Cathedral. For someone who is into history, arts, architecture - never miss this place for a visit
