Imagine the actors of the Roman era uttering verses from ancient tragedies at Plovdiv Roman Theatre. Built in the beginning of the second century CE, this is one of the best-preserved antique theaters in the world. Sit on marble seats with a view of a two-story construction called a skene--the actors' dressing room. Look for the excavated inscriptions and statues on the stage, which were incorporated into the building's architecture after its reconstruction. Today, the theater serves the city's contemporary cultural life and seats about 500 people. Stop at the entrance for informational materials. Request a guided tour, if you'd like one, before your visit. Plan your Plovdiv Roman Theatre visit and explore what else you can see and do in Plovdiv using our Plovdiv road trip planner.

  • The Roman Theatre was randomly unearthed in the late 1970s during excavations for civil construction; it was later partially rebuilt. Although the reconstructions often disfigure the original, it remains to be admired this work that the Romans built within the hundred years, under the Emperor Trajan. It has been calculated that it could accommodate almost seven thousand spectators; there are still some original decorations and statues. In summer it is home to concerts and performances. It remains one of Plovdiv's must-see visits; For those interested, I recommend the purchase of a cumulative ticket (cost 15 leva, a very affordable price) that entitles you to visit 5 sites, to choose from: the Roman amphitheater, 4 vintage houses, an art gallery and the ancient pharmacy.
