Spent a week at ReefCI and absolutely loved everything about it! Willie and his whole team are so kind, knowledgeable, hardworking, and fun to hang out with. Everything runs so smoothly there and the island is an absolute paradise. The dives were great - we took our Advanced Open Water course there and it was a fantastic place to learn. Would love to go back and visit again some time soon!
A great dip into a well organized volunteer tourism program Reef CI is extremely well organized. The staff, meals, equipment on the remote, primitive island are all well-figured out at this point (3 years in the current manifestation). The meals were a great fusion of local and western palate. Yes, we used the hand sanitizer most of the time to minimize water waste, we had drip showers, but it was all fine. We easily stayed clean and healthy. Being on a remote island 5-10m boat ride from dive sites made it super easy to do 3-4 dives in a day, well over safe surface level intervals (2-3 hours b/n each dive). I believe this is a better experience than a live aboard boat trip as we get to enjoy solid ground after each dive; nap on hammocks, log dives on the communal picnic table under the soft sun. Two-thirds of the staff are locally employed. Many from traditional fishing families who now teach their families and communities in sustainable fishing. 1 was even a marine ranger for 10 years before coming to Reef CI. The dive masters also have a solid caliber of training and seem to spend meticulous time and patience drilling their students. 2 of the staff are marine scientists, another a commercial diver & professional photographer. They have a great crew. Reef CI's program was a great way for us to dip into volunteer tourism. We stayed 1 week which was perfect as we were already rescue diver certified; we were able to spend most of our time spearfishing or surveying the ocean for endangered conchs or commercial lobsters. We only took the additional lionfish specialty so we can experience managing holding the basket while spearing lionfish underwater. Most of the dives are lionfish spearing, so it was an easy specialty add on. This was the best vacation we've ever had. We now plan to have all future vacations to be a combination of volunteering and tourism. Since we were only there for 1 week, first time learning how to be citizen scientists, it was almost more like an educational vacation. We had limited impact in helping the ocean. However, it was a great, soft way learning to be more informed citizens of this planet. The only potential downside was missing out on whale shark season. However. We were already filled with activities in 1 week. If folks are staying for longer, it may be good to stay between seasons when the whale sharks are in the area or turtles are nesting to get more variety in the education.
