Secession Building (Secessionsgebaude), Vienna

3.1
#20 of 114 in Museums in Vienna
Secession Building (Secessionsgebaude) hosts art pieces from rebel artists, the most notable being Gustav Klimt. Completed in 1898, the building covers 1,000 sq m (11,000 sq ft) and is featured on Austrian coins of 50 eurocents. The architectural form is uncommon, with cubical shapes and a dome made of gilded laurel branches--initially referred to as cabbage head. Spend time at the main exhibit--the Beethoven Frieze, a 1902 work of Gustav Klimt--which illustrates a human desire for happiness in a world of suffering and evil forces. The museum constantly rotates its exhibits. • The golden dome of the building was quite a sight to see. I didn't go inside though but it was a nice building to walk past.  more »

  • Nice museum. A building with a nice architecture but a troubled history. I enjoyed the hour spent here.
  • Had looked forward to my visit to see the Klimt mural but it was spoiled by a grumpy woman who insisted I should put my bag in a locker! I was not asked to do this on entry but was hounded by a woman who didn't even bother to show me where the lockers were. The exhibition was disappointing, the welcome non existent and a waste of money. I recommend staying outside the building!
