Stand close enough to touch the remains of Austrian royalty at Kaisergruft--the final resting place of Habsburgs. The burial chamber beneath the Capuchin church and monastery has been the place of entombment for this royal family since 1633. It houses the bones of 145 Habsburgs, including 12 emperors and 18 empresses. Walk down the well-lit and airy chambers with bare walls. See how 107 metal sarcophagi range in style from puritan plain to exuberant Rococo. Enter the Maria-Theresia-Gruft--a domed chamber dominated by a huge, elaborate sarcophagus for the empress and her husband. Note how the plain coffin of Emperor Joseph II stands in remarkable contrast to that of his parents. It's quite good if you have a pass, but I wouldn't pay specifically, basically lots of Coffins some that are beautifully built with dead royals in. Not much information though. more »
I believe this exhibition is quite unique and informative... Nowadays there is road construction in front of the church but this does not prevent the crypt opening. A quite impressive way to memorize.... more »
The place is not very big but it is well worth your time. Incredible collection of tombs that demonstrate the glory, power, luxury, status of the past rulers. A place with extraordinary vibe. The environment is tense and clashing. Gives you the experience you are looking for. You can feel the power and presence that just do not get washed away by death or history.
Honestly, this has been one of my favorite things in Vienna. I love the dark and morbid stuff, and this definitely met the criteria. My only issue was everything was in German minus 1 little pamphlet.
