Mt Gower, Lord Howe Island

#4 of 18 in Things to do in Lord Howe Island
Hike the paths of Mt Gower to see 57 variations of endemic ferns and over 200 species of native birds, such as a variety of rare petrels, discovered to be breeding here in 1914. Bushwalking, natural history tours, talks, and guided hikes take place along the many trails leading up to the peak of the mountain, which is 875 meters (2,871 ft) high. The highly eroded mountain was produced about 6.3 million years ago by successive basalt lava flows that once filled a large volcanic crater. Evidence of this ancient activity can be seen as horizontal basalt strata on the mountain’s cliffs, which are occasionally interspersed with dikes. • Walked with a group of about 20. This is at the serious end of Grade Five walks. I don't want to put anyone off this walk because it is spectacular but you do need to have a pretty good level of overa...  more »
  • And I was back on the Mt Gower. Dry and sunny weather had the advantage that the whole ascent and descent was massively easier than if you have to climb over SOAP rocks. Also, we enjoyed a clear view about all us from the lunch place. Unfortunately, the drought has many disadvantages: nature suffers from the lack of water and in the cloud forest on the plateau, I missed this mystical silence. I went again with Jack Shick, who could tell many news of the island life in General. The day passed quickly in the air and again has made me a lot of fun. Here is still a "packing list" for climbers: Not too heavy shoes with good grip profile, 2 l of water and snacks, a windbreaker for the lunch stop and very light gloves.

  • To summit Mt Gower you need to do a bit of everything. Some hiking, tramping, water crossings, rappelling, lots of climbing and getting muddy👌🏽
  • This was one of the most challenging walks (actually no, climbs) I have ever done. The end result is definitely worth it. Jack was a wonderful guide with a wealth of knowledge. If you are scared of heights this is not the walk for you. On certain parts you are required to pull yourself up via rope and going down can seem even more intimidating. Would I recommend this to other people? - definitely, it is a veiw which is worth going through the pain to experience.
