Ubirr, Kakadu National Park

Must see · Ruin · National Park
Ubirr charms with its poise and beauty. A main draw is the collection of Aboriginal rock paintings, continuously painted since 40,000BC. Look out for art depicting barramundi, turtles, and possums. Other rock faces show images of kangaroos and fish painted in X-ray art. Predating these are paintings of Mimi spirits, thin figures believed to be the first of the Creation Ancestors to paint on rock. Look for the Tasmanian tiger, a painting drawn 2,000 years ago. Climb to the top of Ubirr for a panoramic view of the floodplains and wetlands. Don’t miss viewing the Rainbow Serpent Gallery and its sacred path, an important part in Aboriginal spiritual beliefs.
