Albany's Historic Whaling Station
Now a museum, the Cheynes Beach Whaling Station was Australia’s last operating whaling station when it closed in 1978. Albany's Historic Whaling Station displays the largest whale skeleton in Western Australia, a 22 m (72 ft) long pygmy blue whale skeleton. The former cutting-up decks and processing factory display whole vessels, harpoons, and ship models. Inside, view movies about marine life and whaling operations. Outside, explore the rusting Cheynes IV whale chaser and equipment. Very interesting machinery on the whaling ship and clean boiler room with interesting sample steam engines of different sizes for those interested in how things were done in a bygone era, along with enough but not too many photos of the old station and other artifacts. Definitely a wow factor walking in to the skeleton shed for the first time. Must see.

A great trip around a traditional whaling boat with great commentary from staff who really know their subject. The gift souvenirs shop have a selection of books, artifacts and trinkets of your visit. There is a good cafe serving drinks and snacks.
